The next scene showcases the elaborate sets, with oversized furniture that makes the human actors appear to be the size of actual cats.

Victoria and two other cats are seen prancing around on massive bed, tossing feathers into the air.

Victoria is also seeing pirouetting… which lead to one of the many criticisms of the trailer… involving the tail.

Writer-editor Noah Harald joked, ‘Show us the anthropomorphic cat buttholes you cowards. #CatsMovie,’ referring to the tail seemingly coming directly out of it’s hind end, not above it.

The trailer also features Jennifer Hudson singing the iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber song Memory from the original theatrical production, along with a number of random shots from the seemingly several song and dance numbers.

One seemingly random shot even lead to an conspiracy theory, of sorts, with @eleanormtweets claiming there is a Soviet conspiracy embedded in the film.

The trailer ends with a rare bit of non-musical dialogue, with Victoria asking another feline character, ‘Are you going to try for a new life?’ before a number of cats take a bow.

The trailer lead to wildly divisive reactions, with late night TV writer Jesse McLaren was even so bold as to say, ‘The Cats trailer is literally more terrifying than the IT trailer.’

TV writer-producer Kevin Beigel (Enlisted, Cougar Town) added, ‘You know that when the studio drops the “turn me into a cat” app we’re all gonna get it and we’re all gonna be cats.

Still, there were still some who dug the trailer, including Josh Raby, who opined, ‘Listen that CATS trailer is bonkers and we need more bonkers I regret to inform you, I dug it.’

Raby was certainly in the minority, though, with Birth.Movies.Death editor in chief Scott Wampler tweeting, ‘Showed my wife the CATS trailer and she said “this is the final straw” and left the house.’

Freelance journalist Courtney Howard added, ‘WTAF (what the actual fur) is this?! If we complain loudly enough here about #CatsMovie like we did about Sonic’s design, can we also change it?’

Howard was referring to the release of the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer, which had such a negative reaction that the film’s director promised to alter the look that would please the fans.

TV producer/director Matthew A. Cherry joked, ‘They ain’t drop it on Caturday or nothing. Thats how I know their finger isn’t on the pulse,’ hinting the trailer should have dropped on Saturday/Caturday.

Cats has been described as a horror musical fantasy comedy-drama film.

It is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical of the same name, which in turn was based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot.

The story centers on a tribe of cats who must decide each year which of them will rise to the Heaviside Layer, a heaven-like destination, to come back to a life anew.

An unabashed cat fanatic, Swift found it easy to accept the role.

‘As a cat lover and a cat owner, if you told me I was going to get to go to cat school every day for work — what?’ she said on a video posted to her own channel.

She also dished some details on her ‘cat school’ curriculum during a talk with Entertainment Weekly.

‘You could learn about how to create the motions of cats, how to think like they think, how to sense things the way that they do, carry yourself the way a cat would. I learned a lot,’ she explained.

As for the feline features seen in the trailer, all were added after-the-fact with a new technology Swift attempted to describe as something ‘not animated,’ and ‘not motion capture … it’s somehow this new way that hasn’t been done before. And they’re giving us a tail that moves naturally, and ears and whiskers.’

In a brief behind-the-scenes segment featured on Entertainment Tonight, Swift opened up on her thespian background and how it makes her cut out for the job.

‘My first memories of performance go back to when I was in Pennsylvania growing up. My favorite thing was getting to be theatrical – to tell a story, and I’ve always brought that sort of narrative element to my live shows,’ she said.

It is choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

The film is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019, by Universal Pictures.
