Drake won Best Rap Song for “God’s Plan” at the 61st Grammy Awards on Sunday.
The award was shared with songwriters Daveon Jackson, Brock Korsan, Ron LaTour, Matthew Samuels and Noah Shebib.
“This is an opinion-based sport,” Drake said of the music industry as he accepted the award. “This is a business where, sometimes, it’s up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed race kid from Canada has to say, or what a fly Spanish girl from New York, or a brother from Houston.”
“But, look,” he continued. “The point is, you’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero from your hometown, if there’s people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain and the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows — you don’t need this right here. I promise you, you already won.”
Other nominees for the Rap Song category included, Kendrick Lamar‘s “King’s Dead,” Eminem‘s “Lucky You,” and Travis Scott‘s “Sicko Mode.”
