Love Island’s Maura Higgins admits she ‘never realised’ she was a feminist before the show and feels she has been ‘misjudged’ her whole life

Maura Higgins has admitted she ‘never realised’ she was a feminist before she took part in Love Island.

The reality star, 28, was hailed by fans during her time in the villa for honest and frank discussions about sex.

But the Longford native admitted to Grazia magazine that she feels like she has been ‘misjudged’ for her whole life until now.

Speaking out: Maura Higgins, 28, has admitted she ‘never realised’ she was a feminist before she took part in Love Island

She told the publication: ‘I never realised I was a feminist! I just stand up for myself, and I won’t let anyone talk sh*t about me. And you know, I do talk about sex, but so do guys.’

The ring girl hopes young women who watched the show will learn from Maura’s actions in the villa.

She said: ‘Stick up for yourself. Don’t let anyone walk all over you. Voice your opinion. There’s no point hiding away.’

Maura, who has accumulated more than 2.2million Instagram followers since she left the villa, believes she has been ‘misjudged’ in the past.

She told Grazia magazine: : ‘I never realised I was a feminist! I just stand up for myself, and I won’t let anyone talk sh*t about me. And you know, I do talk about sex, but so do guys’

She said: ‘I’ve always been misjudged, my whole life. I think people look at my Instagram and think of me as a completely different person – because when I meet people out, they always say, “You’re so much nicer than I expected”.’

Maura also gave her thoughts on ‘girl code’ after she coupled up with Curtis Pritchard following his split from Amy Hart.

The model said she believes girl code means that you would never step on the toes of your friend.

However, she admitted she was not friends with Amy and wouldn’t have coupled up with anyone who Lucie, Anna or Molly had been with.

Interview: Maura is featured in the latest issue of Grazia

Although she made it all the way to the final, Maura said she will not watch herself back on Love Island as she believes it would make her cringe.

She also insisted she has not read anything that has been written about her on social media throughout her time on the show, saying she doesn’t care what others think.

It comes just days after Curtis revealed Maura had given him her full support following his decision not to put a label on his sexuality.

Speaking to Heat, the dancer told how he and the grid girl, are ‘on the same page’ when it comes to the recent reports about his personal life in which he revealed he wouldn’t ‘rule out’ a relationship with a man in the future.

Talking about putting a label on things, Curtis said: ‘I don’t feel the need to. Things change all the time, I don’t think things like that need to be labelled.

As long as you’re happy where you are in that moment in life, be happy.’

He then went on to discuss how Maura was feeling about his revelation and if she supported him, adding: ‘Obviously we’ve spoken about it and we’re both on the same page. We’re more than happy with how we are in our relationship and it’s going in the correct direction.’

This week’s GRAZIA is on sale now.
