R. Kelly’s estranged daughter has finally broken her silence in the wake of Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly” docuseries about her father’s alleged sexual abuse against women and young girls.
In her Instagram stories, Buku Abi (whose real name is Joann Kelly) explained why it’s taken so long for her speak up.
“My choice to not speak on him and what he does is for my peace of mind,” she wrote. “My emotional state. And for my healing. I have to do & move in a manner that is best for me.”
Elsewhere in her comments, Abi says she prays for the families and women affected by her father’s actions. “Trust, I have been affected by all of this,” she added. “However, it’s been very difficult to process it all.”
Abi adds she has no relationship with her father. “It has been years since my siblings and I have seen or have spoken to him,” Abi said. She also says her mother, Andrea, Kelly’s ex-wife, has not communicated with the R&B star either.
“The same monster you all confronting me about is my father,” she added, referencing allegations made against the singer in “Surviving R. Kelly.” “I am well aware of who and what he is. I grew up in that house.”
Before closing out, Abi says it’s been a rough year for her family and thanked everyone for their continued support.
Kelly has denied any wrongdoings over the years – despite numerous women coming forward with shocking stories about his behavior.
In the music community, numerous artists are both slamming Kelly and distancing themselves from him. His music streams have nearly doubled in the aftermath of the series.
Kelly is also under criminal investigation in Georgia.
