Sunday night’s Season 8 premiere of “Game of Thrones” ended with Jaime Lannister’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) arrival at Winterfell. The last person he expected to see was waiting in the corner for him — Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), whom Jaime crippled when he pushed him out a window in the first episode of the series back in 2011.
Jaime’s shocked expression revealed that he assumed Bran was dead.
The trailer for the next episode teases Jaime facing a day of reckoning. He is summoned to answer to Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) for his actions regarding the death of the Mad King. This is direct parallel to Tyrion’s trial for the death of Joffrey in Season 4.
In the earlier incident, Tyrion was saved by Varys (Conleth Hill), who smuggled him off to join Daenerys. Will someone as reliable as Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) come to Jaime’s rescue? And that role does the psychic Bran play in Jaime’s ultimate fate?
Will the one-handed hunk even get to fight in the big battle we’ve been hearing about?
In a related event, the relationship between Daenerys and Sansa was in the spotlight. “You should have never listened to Cersei,” she says. Perhaps these two queens will bond over their hatred of the mistress of King’s Landing.
After last week’s fanciful dragon ride, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) has his work cut out for him as it looks like the battle against the Night King is starting a little sooner than expected. As he asks Tormund Nightbane (Kristofer Hivju), “How much longer do we have?”
“Game of Thrones” final season airs Sunday nights on HBO at 9 pm.
