A multi-vehicle crash involving at least one lorry has closed the M25 anticlockwise during rushhour.
Emergency services have dashed to the smash, near junction 9 at Leatherhead, Surrey.
Traffic has backed up past junction 10 for the A3 at Cobham and delays of up to one hour are expected.
The anticlockwise carriageway will remain shut between the two junctions until at least midday, with diversions in place onto the A3 and through Surrey.
But it is feared those travelling to Gatwick Airport this morning will be affected.
Traffic is also busy clockwise on the motorway between the two junctions and on other nearby routes, including the A3, A243 and A24.
Surrey Police tweeted to confirm it is investigating the collision. It is believed two people have been freed from the wreckage, though the severity of their conditions is not yet known.
Temperatures in Surrey plunged to below freezing overnight and roads remain very icy.
The latest winter storm is set to bring further misery for commuters tomorrow, and may cut off rural communities.
Highways England have warned roads will remain treacherous throughout the day.
