Tragedy strikes as Champion Hurdle hero Espoir D'Allen dies at the age five

CHAMPION Hurdle hero Espoir D'Allen has tragically died at the age of five.

News broke last week that he would miss the upcoming jumps season after suffering an injury, but sadly he could not be saved.

Gavin Cromwell's stable star went unbeaten in four starts last season.

He rattled up a hat-trick of Grade 3 victories before his crowning moment in the Champion Hurdle.

He cruised through the Grade 1 contest and drew clear to beat Melon by 15 lengths.

In total he won nine of his 10 career starts, amassing prize money of £371,707.
