A baby has been born on a train after its mother went into labour unexpectedly while on a London-bound service.

Trains heading into Stratford International were delayed after an ambulance was called to the train following the birth of the new baby. 

The baby was successful delivered, although it is unclear what its gender is as of yet. 

The woman went into labour at around 20.55 and her new tot was born shortly after.

The pregnant woman was on a Southeastern train heading into London when she went into labour. 

Paramedics were called and they rushed to her carriage to deliver her new child. 

Southeastern’s Twitter account wrote: ‘London bound Trains are being delayed at Stratford International after an ambulance has been called to a train following the birth of a new baby on board.

‘London bound trains are unable to stop at the station until the ambulance arrives. Congratulations to mother & child.’ 

A later update read: ‘The paramedics are on site now to take the mother and new baby to the hospital and the train will be on the move soon.’ 

The news was met with an outpouring of supportive and delighted tweets on social media. 

One person wrote: ‘I’m on one of the delayed trains and for once I don’t care. Congratulations!’

Another said: ‘To be fair that’s a delay I won’t complain about. Congratulations!’

A third asked: ‘Does the baby get free travel for life like they do if born on some flights?’

Southeastern have confirmed the mum and her new-born are now on their way to hospital.

A statement read: ‘We were pleased to welcome a new arrival on board one of our services earlier this evening following the birth of a baby on board at Stratford International. 

‘At 20:55 the Ramsgate to St Pancras service was held for around 45 minutes in the station while an ambulance was called to the train, and paramedics have since moved both mother and new baby to the hospital. Congratulations to both mother & child.’
