China just proffered its most pathetic excuse yet for the mass detention of Muslims in far-western Xinjiang: The internment camps are actually … vocational-training centers. Please.
Even more insulting: Shohrat Zakir, the region’s governor, told the state news agency the camps are free and voluntary, guiding inmates toward a “modern life” in which they feel “confident about the future.”
In fact, it’s China’s most repressive effort to “re-educate” its citizens since the deadly Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. By US and UN estimates, Beijing has sent more than a million Muslims, mostly ethnic Uighurs, to the camps over the past two years. Ex-detainees report being forced to disavow their Islamic beliefs, the AP reports. And the regime is sending internees’ children to orphanages.
On Monday, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley described the program as “straight out of George Orwell.” And Vice President Mike Pence this month denounced the deliberate attempt to “strangle Uighur culture and stamp out the Muslim faith.”
Bringing China into the world economy was supposed to moderate its government. So much for that benefit of globalization.
