Mum fined £800 for taking kids off school to celebrate CANCER recovery

Katie McDermott had gone through 18 weeks of chemotherapy and had a double mastectomy. 

Doctors declared her clear of cancer last year and in October, she applied to Central Lancaster High School, which two of her four kids attend, for six days’ leave in December. 

But the NHS worker and husband Darren were rejected, as their reasons were not “exceptional circumstances”. 

Katie said: “The school have said they were model students. They deserved this trip after everything they have been through.” 

Head Nicola Hall said it was school policy not to authorise term-time family holidays.
