The attack took place while Mr Vasanthan’s 13-year-old son Mithunan was also in the shop – and was captured on CCTV.

Despite the robbers wielding huge hunting knives Mr Vasanthan chased them out with a broom handle during the terrifying raid at 12pm on November 1.

Mr Vasanthan, 42, told BirminghamLive: ‘My son was in the shop at the time, so my instinct was to protect him.

‘I have been at the shop seven months and have had many problems with people stealing and gangs on the estate.

‘My instinct was to get them out of my shop. I picked up the broom handle and chased them out.

‘I have passed the CCTV on to police and I hope they will be caught.

‘I have received a great deal of support from people within the community following this incident and I would just like to thank them.’

Mr Vasanthan managed to fight off the three raiders – despite them carrying large knives

One of the raiders fell from his bicycle in his haste to escape from the shop

The balaclava-clad robbers were captured on CCTV arriving on push bikes before entering the shop. The footage then shows them being chased out of the shop – with one robber falling off his bike in his haste to escape.

Police are now investigating the attempted robbery and are linking it to two other incidents on November 1.

The first saw a woman in her 40s threatened with a knife and robbed of her Vauxhall Meriva by two men in Sheridan Walk, at 10.50am.

The car was later recovered in Hawkinge Drive. Then after the Best-one shop was targeted, three balaclava wearing robbers went into Brooks Newsagent, on Brooks Croft.

The trio threatened staff and made off with money and cigarettes.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: ‘Officers believe the incidents are linked and are in the process of reviewing CCTV and working with Intel to identify the offenders.
