Want a Good, Easy Sweat? Try This Simple Interval Workout.

Interval training doesn’t always need to be complicated. Sure, it’s cool to vary your rest ratios, or mix in a variety of equipment, or try an EMOM (every minute on the minute) or carefully build static holds in to torture yourself during your “rest periods.”

But sometimes, a simple sweat with a friend is all you need — and that’s exactly what you’ll get with this partner treadmill workout from Don Saladino, NASM, the superhero trainer behind the physiques of Ryan Reynolds, Zachary Levi, and other actors with powerful roles. Sure, the treadmill often comes with dread, and plenty of people don’t really like to run on it anyway, right? But here, you’ll have fun, burn calories, get a good sweat — and work in short intervals that can often help you maintain cleaner running form and stay out of bad habits.

The structure here is as simple as it comes: You’re going to get on the treadmill and run, all-out, for one minute. Then your friend hops onto the treadmill and drops another one-minute, all-out run. “There are so many ways to get overly technical with setting up your interval training, and sometimes you just want to get a good sweat and have fun with your training partner,” Saladino wrote in an Instagram post about the training challenge.

Saladino’s solution is simple but effective (and underrated hard, too!), as long as you do it right. Be aggressive during that one-minute run; don’t let it turn into a jog. After each run, you only get to briefly catch your breath (that one minute flies by) before you’re back at it again. You can also do this with 30-second intervals instead of one-minute intervals.

Either way, your goal is to push yourself hard when you’re working . Take advantage of the full minute (or full 30 seconds) of recovery, gearing up to go hard on your next work interval. Hit 10 rounds with your partner, and reap the calorie-burning benefits.
