Steph McGovern challenges Susie Dent to a game of ‘word up’
Susie Dent has been a part of Countdown for nearly 30 years and as such has become known for her knowledge of words in the show’s dictionary corner. Tonight she will join the cast of 8 Out of 10 Cats in a Christmas special of the popular crossover series 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. But how long has the lexicographer been married?
Susie first started her career on screen in 1992 when she joined the then Countdown stars Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman.
More than two decades later Susie has become a well-known part of the series as she currently appears alongside Rachel Riley as well as Nick Hewer.
Susie has admitted that she never expected to still be a part of the show, saying: “It is bizarre that I have been on this show for so long.
“I started in 1992 and never imagined I would still be doing it now, but this is a unique television show.

“I know people like to think they are part of something special when they are on a long-running TV show, but this is a genuinely unique programme.”
Susie has also since appeared on the spin-off series 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown since 2012.
The show which merges Countdown with the comedy panel series 8 Out of 10 Cats is currently on its 17th series with Christmas special of the current series airing tonight.
How long has Susie Dent been married?
The Countdown star is married to primary school teacher Paul Atkins although it is not known when they tied the knot.
Talking about why she prefers to keep her private life out of the spotlight, Susie previously explained: “I’ve been a worrier for as long as I can remember.
“When I was growing up, I worried that people would dismiss me as a boring swot because I always had my nose in a vocabulary book — usually in French or German.

Steph McGovern left stunned after catching out Susie Dent with word
“My constant fear was that people were judging me, although, more recently, I’ve come to an understanding that that needn’t be in a negative way.
“My work, my love of words, became my refuge, both when I was working on bilingual dictionaries for Oxford University Press and then via my involvement with Countdown — and now Catsdown, as I call it.
“I know what I’m doing which makes me feel safe and in charge of myself.”
The lexicographer has opened up on motherhood as she shares her daughters Thea and Lucy with her husband Paul.
The Countdown star said: “Strangely, I didn’t take any time at all to get used to being a mother.
“It felt so instinctive and spontaneous, the whoosh people talk about.
“Motherhood is definitely the best thing I’ve ever experienced and, probably the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.
“I’m so lucky because I know not everyone has that. It’s a real privilege to feel that immediate bond.”
8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Christmas Special will air tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm.
