Four ways to make your bed icy cool during the heatwave

Many of us are struggling to sleep in the heat at the moment.

The “Saharan heatwave” has struck the UK this week in a big way.

Yesterday, temperature soared to a whopping 36C in south-east England – that’s hotter than the Bahamas!

And, while the weather is lovely for BBQ’s and lounging… it’s not so great at night.

As we usually don’t have air-conditioning, lots of us rely on a singular fan to keep cool.

I’m sure many of us have stripped back to using a cotton sheet and minimal PJs (if any).

However, it’s not quite enough to stop us waking up in the night sweating.

So, try these four tips for keeping your bed icy cold during the heatwave:

1. Cool pads

Cooling bed pads are a great way to stop the mattress and pillow from absorbing all your body heat.

You don’t need to freeze or refrigerate them, just put them your bed and you’ll feel colder.

The cool pads react to your own body heat and chill you down a few degrees.

This is especially useful if you find it hard to sleep with a noisy fan in the room.

You can get them as mattress toppers or even to slide into your pillow case.

So you’ll have that “cool side of the pillow” feeling all day.

2. Turn your fan into a cooler

If you already own a fan, this method is cheap as (ice) chips.

Put a bowl of ice in front of the fans in your room.

The air going over the ice will turn colder as it blows around you.

It’s like a fan turned air-conditioner.

If you put big chunks of ice in the bowl they’ll take longer to melt and so you’ll have an icy breeze for longer.

3. Frozen water bottles

This one seems a little weird, but it’s backed up by science.

If you dot frozen solid water bottles around your room, it will keep the temperature of the space a few degrees lower.

As bottles are pretty solid when frozen they should keep working for quite a few hours, if not all night.

You can even attach them to the back of your fan if you have zip-ties.

If you’re struggling with feeling sweaty between the sheets – put the bottles in a ziploc bag an put them into your bed around 30 minutes before you go to sleep.

They’ll cool down your sheets.

Then, when you snuggle in, keep them at the bottom of the bed and behind your pillow.

They should lend you a cooling hand throughout the night.

4. Buckwheat and cotton

Sometimes the material of your bedding can make a huge difference.

Cotton bedsheets won’t hold onto your body heat like nylon or polyester.

The natural material lets heat escape, so you don’t wake up red in the face.

Buckwheat pillows do a similar thing.

Instead of being stuffed with down, or fluffy plastic, these pillows are filled with buckwheat hulls.

Sounds weird, but the hills are supportive and conform to your body weight and posture.

Plus, the little hulls allow for air movement in the pillow.

This allows the air to circulate and keep you cool.

And, you can even put it in the freezer before bed – if you’re roasting.
