Good news, vegetarians.
McDonald’s could be launching a plant-based burger in 2021.
During an investment meeting on Monday, International President Ian Borden said “The McPlant” has been created “by McDonald’s and for McDonald’s”.
Along with a meat-free burger, Borden added the range may include chicken substitutes and vegetarian breakfast sarnies.
The manager of McDonald’s international operations added: “We are excited about the opportunity because we believe we have a proven, delicious-tasting product.”
Sadly, Borden remained tight-lipped about where the plant-based menu items would be launching first.
McDonald’s discussions shouldn’t come as too much as a surprise as the fast food giant dabbled in plant-based products last year.
Back in September, it trialled a meatless burger in Ontario, Canada.
The menu item was created in collaboration with Beyond Meat, a Los Angeles-based producer of meat-free patties.
Select customers got to try the burger last year, which contained “plant, lettuce and tomato”, along with cheese, gherkins and sauces.
Beyond Meat insists it is still involved with the McPlant development.
The company said: "Beyond Meat and McDonald's co-created the plant-based patty which will be available as part of their McPlant platform."
