Queen Maxima of the Netherlands enjoyed the friendliest of hugs with a well-wisher as she arrived to open a social innovation project in southern Holland today.

The 46-year-old wife of King Willem-Alexander grinned broadly as she moved in for the embrace with the woman, known as Nursemin, just before leaving the Social Lab launch in Hertogenbosch.

The heartwarming moment saw Maxima and the lady, who helps to make designs created by the project, share a chat and tender embrace shortly after the queen had declared the initiative, housed in a former cattle feed factory, open.

The glamorous royal recycled one of her favourite outfits – by top Dutch designer Natan – as she arrived at the project earlier this morning.

Maxima complemented her chic look with her blonde tresses tied back, allowing her statement bow on her blouse – and a stunning pair of sizeable coloured-stone flower earrings -to make full impact.

The smiling queen, who hails from Argentina, waved at the gathered crowds as she arrived at the Social Lab headquarters.

Fully embracing the interactivity of the project, which is housed in a former cattle feed factory, Maxima browsed the designs and trashed a copper drum to officially announce the project open.

The designers working at the lab explained to the mother-of-three how the designs are put together by people with an occupational disability and the long-term unemployed.

The makers and their supervisors receive explanations and training before making the products, which will be produced at work facilities and institutions throughout the country.

Those behind the project, Simone Kramer and Petra Janssen, told the gathered audience that the ideas were ‘design with meaning’.

The Social Lab’s aim, they said, is to let people on the sidelines participate in society again by making beautiful products.

‘Social label is a growing movement of people who strive for a social, sustainable, inclusive economy, because an economy that improves society does not leave anyone on the sidelines.’
