Wayne Rooney is closing on a sensational summer move to Major League Soccer side DC United.
The Everton striker’s agent, Paul Stretford, is understood to have held talks with the MLS club, with Rooney poised to join them this summer.
Talks between Rooney’s camp and DC United are said to have gone well, with Everton willing to let the 32-year-old leave.
The MLS transfer window opens on July 10, with Rooney ready to take up the challenge of playing abroad for the first time in his career.
DC United tried to sign Rooney when he left Manchester United last summer, but the forward wanted a return to his boyhood club.
Although Rooney has a year left on his current Everton deal, his starts are being rationed by boss Sam Allardyce, with the former England skipper keen to play more.
Rooney would certainly do that with DC United and the lure of being one of the star attractions in the MLS could prove too hard to resist for the forward.
After a bright start to his second spell with Everton, Rooney has struggled for game-time since Allardyce took charge.
He has started 16 of Allardyce’s 23 Premier League games and last scored in December, with a move to the States seen as the shot in the arm his flagging career needs.
