Troubling rise in NYC shootings leaves at least 40 kids and teens injured in just four months

AT least 40 kids and teens have been injured in shootings that have hit New York City over the past four months.

It’s thought that young people make up one in every 10 shooting victims recorded.

And, the figure is set to match or potentially exceed the 138 youth victims that were reported last year, according to the New York Times.

But, the tally is considerably down on the 530 young victims reported in 1991.

Straight A-student Angellyh Yambo, 16, was killed near her high school in South Bronx on April 9.

She and two other teens were hit when gunshots erupted near University Prep Charter High School.

Her aunt Margarita Yambo told the New York Post: “She was a girl who went to school and came straight home.

“She was never in the street. She was one of the sweetest girls you’d ever meet.”

The slain teen was branded “loving and caring” by family members.

Two other victims, a 17-year-old male, and a 16-year-old female, were injured.

School chaos as kids held inside as armed cops swoop

The male victim sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks while the other female was shot in the shin, cops said.

Cops said the teens were innocent bystanders after a gunman opened at his intended target.

New York City mayor Eric Adams branded the incident a “tragedy and unacceptable”.

He vowed: “It's why we can't abandon our streets to gun violence."

BROOKLYN SHOOTINGS

At least four kids were injured after suspected Brooklyn subway shooter Frank James opened fire inside a rush-hour train on April 12.

Cops said that at least 29 people were injured in total.

Officers found a Glock 17, three Glock magazines, shell casings, bullets, two detonated smoke grenades, two undetonated ones, a hatchet and a U-Haul key at the scene.

Smoke filled the train amid an onslaught of at least 33 bullets, screaming riders running through 36th Street station in Sunset Park, and bloodied people lying on the platform.

A day after James opened fire, a 15-year-old was hit at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal Mall.

He reportedly suffered an injury to the left side of his head.

It’s not known if he was deliberately targeted.

Pictures that circulated on the Citizen app showed the victim with blood-soaked bandages on his head.

Mohammed Alam, a food vendor, told The New York Post: “I see people running fast away. I was scared. It was very scary.”

Meanwhile, Jazz, who had been shopping at Target with her partner and kids, said: “There was a lady screaming ‘stop it, ‘stop it’ between the kids.

“She kept saying ‘stop it, it’s not worth it’. Shortly after we heard the pops.”

Jazz branded the ordeal “traumatizing” as it happened in broad daylight.

Cops sealed off the mall as they combed the area for clues.

Police said there were around 50 kids outside the mall when shots rang out.

KADE LEWIN

Last month, Kade Lewin, 12, was gunned down as he was eating food with family members in a car.

He was shot in the head and chest – just moments after they pulled over to eat their Boston Market food.

Cops revealed that at least 11 bullets were fired into the Toyota Corolla.

The seventh grader's principal Angela DeFilippis told mourners at his memorial service that he could "outsmile" anyone, NY1 reported.

She said: "His story is not his death, it's his life. From his classmates Kade is Kadey.

"He is playing football, hanging out with friends playing Roblox and Xbox. He is oxtail and curry goat and candy."

An eight-year-old girl was in the back seat of the car. She wasn’t injured.

A witness told the Post: “I heard eight shots and I would say within 20 seconds of the shots, I saw a car on the corner facing East New York Avenue… and they almost got into an accident with oncoming traffic.”

Cops branded the shooting “senseless”.

The boy's devastated mom Suzette Lewin urged any suspects to come forward.

She said: "Somebody say something. I'm asking for justice for Kade."

TIARA AIKEN

In March, Tiara Aiken was targeted after leaving a Brooklyn daycare center with her dad.

Cops said that the gunman’s target was a man who was putting his two-year-old son into a car, according to the Times.

The toddler’s mom Avion Bartlett told The Post that she wanted to leave Brooklyn following the trauma.

She said: “We have to go.”

Bartlett revealed that she told her husband that she didn’t feel safe in her home.

Tiara’s dad said he had never seen the shooter before.

BABY SHOT

In January, an 11-month-old baby girl was shot in the face while she was in a car with her mom Miraida Gomez, 32, in the Bronx.

They were waiting for her dad who was in a grocery store shopping.

Cops said the suspected shooter was wearing a dark-colored hoodie that had a Nike logo on the front, WABC reported.

The suspected gunman was wearing gray sweatpants and black and white sneakers.

Following the shooting, Mayor Adams said: “It should be unimaginable that this would happen in our city. But it did.”

He said the incident was a “wake up” call.

He vowed: “I refuse to surrender New York City to violence.”
