A guide dog was viciously attacked by another canine and left "crying and screaming", her owner claims.
Katherine Vickery says she was walking home from a visit to the doctors when a dog off its lead ran up to her beloved pet Vikki.
The other dog attacked Vikki and pulled her away from Katherine, whop couldn’t see what was happen due to severe visual impairment.
Vikki was injured and had to have stitches in her ear.
Katherine has thanked members of the public for helping to assist her during and after the incident in Yeovil, but she is now hoping some of these witnesses will come forward to help a police investigation.
She told Somerset Live : "I did not realise there was any dog in the street but it ran up to Vikki and pulled her away from me.
"Then I could hear Vikki screaming and crying and I didn’t know what to do.
"Luckily some other members of the public intervened to get the other dog off Vikki but by this time she was unfortunately already injured with a tear to her ear."
The incident, which took place on Monday, April 23, at around 5.40pm near The Entertainer toy shop, left Vikki with serious injuries.
Katherine said: "Vikki required sedation and stitches to her ear at the vets, and is currently wearing a cone on her head to prevent her scratching her ear and undoing the stitches.
"She has been prescribed antibiotics and other medication.
"She is very frightened of going outside following the attack and we have only just managed to get her to go out into my parents garden.
"She is not her usual self and has spent a lot of time wimpering. I feel I have failed Vikki and let her down because she has always been there for me but I didn’t manage to protect her and stop her getting hurt."
Katherine believes there were six or seven people who witnessed the attack or stopped to assist, and is urging those people to get in touch with the police.
She added: "One of them kindly went to buy tissues so we could wipe the bleeding from Vikki’s ear.
"I was quite distressed and some people also stayed with me until a taxi arrived to take me and Vikki to the vets.
"I am very grateful to those people.
"The police now advise we need to try and trace the witnesses to assist with the investigation."
Call police with information on 101.
