He said one of the man’s skip wagons was in the way when he drove up to work.
The man came out and began swearing at him and ‘threatened to smash his car up’.
Mr Wood, who lives in Rastrick, West Yorkshire, said: ‘The next thing I knew he hit me in the face with a shovel, hitting me on the left cheek and scraping my ear.
‘It was quite a blow and then he tried to hit me again as he was ranting away. And then he wandered away as if nothing had happened.’

He went to A&E at Calderdale Royal Hospital for X-rays and a check over. He said his health has been affected and he is currently only able to work part time.
Mr Wood added that his wife Susan didn’t believe what had happened when he told her.
West Yorkshire Police said a man has been spoken to in connection with this incident and enquiries are continuing.
No one from the other company was available for comment.
Secretary at Deighton Engineers James Deighton said: ‘We have had problems with this person ever since he moved in a couple of years ago. Sometimes we are unable to access our own business.
‘It’s our land and we have only ever been kind to him. He has pushed me about in the past in a similar situation.
‘I can’t believe what happened to be honest. If he hadn’t have parked his waggon across three of our spaces it would not have happened.’
