Hair trends for AW22 are a huge 90s revival

No, we’re not over the 90s just yet.

We’ve been looking to eras gone by for fashion and makeup inspiration (hello, skinny brows), so it only makes sense haircuts are having a bit of a recycle, looking to big dos from past decades and updating them with modern touches.

There are three cuts that are set to be big this autumn and winter, according to Wella.

Here’s how to make them work for your hair.

90s layered blow out

Jordanna Cobella, Wella hair expert, says: ‘There’s a revival for all things the 90s, and haircuts are no exception.

‘The iconic 90s layered blow out is back, first famously worn by the likes of Jennifer Aniston.

‘Now we are seeing this look blow up on social media inspired by it-girl Matilda Djerf and Suki Waterhouse.

‘The longer face-framing layers encourage natural movement and interest in long hair that can otherwise feel flat or uninspiring.’

This cut works well on hair that is naturally straight, so the layers hang and there’s room to add in a wave.

It also can create the illusion of more texture in the hair.

Jordanna says: ‘Hair mousse is a key product to create this look and adds subtle volume that works so well with the 90s Layered Blow-Out.

‘I recommend applying a pump of mousse to your hair, distributing evenly on damp hair from root to tip, and blow-dry with a round brush.’

Amelie bob

Jordanna says bob variations have been the cut for 2022 – and this one is no different.

‘AW22 sees the bob take on a Parisian feel with a statement fringe and wavy, undone texture.

‘Perfectly framing the neck and jawline, the Amelie bob helps to create structure and definition, flattering most facial shapes.

‘What’s great about this cut is that it can be a transitional look: such as a grown-out pixie or a statement cut from longer lengths.

‘The Amelie bob is worn best with a slight wave and texture.’

Before blow drying, use a styling spray to add greater hold to any texture you build.

Power Pixie

Another retro cut, the pixie worn by Mia Farrow is in.

Rob Eaton, hair stylist, says: ‘Inspired by Mia Farrow’s classic pixie cut, we’re seeing a modern take on the style for AW.

‘Worn with a choppy side fringe and longer layers at the back, this modern pixie cut takes inspiration from the classic cut.

‘Perfect for those with a round, oval, or heart-shaped face, the short layers help create angles and definition around the jawline.

‘To create this sleek look and control any flyaway and frizz, prep your hair with a primer before blow-drying.’

Don’t forget to get regular trims with this one to maintain the chic shape of the power pixie.
