Arsenal defender Cedric Soares 'targeted by Atletico Madrid' as transfer replacement for Kieran Trippier

ATLETICO MADRID are targeting Arsenal ace Cedric Soares as a potential Kieran Trippier replacement, according to reports.

Diego Simeone's side are hunting a new right-back after accepting that Trippier wanted to return to England.

The Argentine wants to add another option to Croatian Sime Vrsaljko.

According to talkSPORT, Gunners back-up Cedric is on Atletico's wishlist.

The Portuguese is available for transfer after finding himself stuck behind summer signing Takehiro Tomiyasu in the pecking order.

Atletico want to sign Cedric on loan with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.

The 30-year-old has played just 34 minutes of Premier League football since the Japanese star's arrival in late August.

He has been a regular in the League Cup, however, laying on assists against AFC Wimbledon and Sunderland.

Atletico didn't want to sell Trippier to moneybags Newcastle.

But forlorn Simeone admitted earlier this week: "We want him to stay – he’s a very important player.

“But nowadays, when a player wants to leave, you can't force them to stay."

The reigning LaLiga champions are currently fourth in the table – 14 points behind leaders and rivals Real Madrid.

Next month they face Man United in the Champions League.
