Darts fans in disbelief as De Zwaan busts going for big number twice in a row

Offbeat news from the world of sport

Darts fans and commentators were left in disbelief as a top player incredibly bust his score twice in consecutive visits during a tournament at the weekend.

Jeffrey De Zwaan was in action against Ian White at the European Matchplay in Trier Germany. After losing the first leg, the Dutchman was on course to make it 1-1 and needed just 31 with White nowhere near a finish. But aiming for a single 15 to set up double, De Zwaan got it all wrong, hitting the treble 15 bed before putting his hand to his face in embarrassment.

“He should have been nowhere near treble 15,” said the PDC commentator.

All was not lost though and the 26-year-old had another chance to close out the leg, only to get it all wrong again, hitting double 15 before cracking a wry smile.

“An overcompensation from Jeffrey de Zwaan, he’s managed to bust on the 15 set-up twice in consecutive visits,” added the commentator.

Fans were also left gobsmacked, although many took to social media to express their sympathy for de Zwaan too.

“Can happen to the best of us,” tweeted one while another added: “It even happens to the pros.” A third noticed: “Kirk Bevins [referee] almost burst out laughing after the second visit!”

White went on to win the leg and the match 6-3 to continue his remarkable record against De Zwaan. The pair have met 11 times in ranking events, with White winning on every occasion, including two whitewashes.

White went out to eventual tournament winner Luke Humphries in the quarter-finals. Humphries clinched his fourth European Tour title of the season after a thrilling 8-7 win over Rowby-John Rodriguez in the final.
