Duijvenbode told ‘Pat Butcher wants her earrings back’ after Gerwyn Price loss

Things couldn't have gone much worse for Dirk van Duijvenbode on Tuesday as the Dutchman was compared to EastEnders battleaxe Pat Butcher and dumped out of the PDC World Darts Championship all in the space of around 20 minutes.

Van Duijvenbode, 29, is one of the sport's characters but had no answer to the brilliance of reigning world champion Gerwyn Price, who booked his place in the quarter-final with a devastating 4-1 win.

The 'Aubergenius' started brightly against The Iceman, winning a topsy-turvy first set 3-2 to hold the advantage going into the break.

But that was as good as it got for the Dutchman as Price produced a scintillating display of finishing to win the next 12 legs without reply.

Van Duijvenbode simply had no answer to the Welshman's brilliance on the doubles as he secured his place in the next round of the competition.

To add insult to injury for the 2020 World Grand Prix runner-up, some fans on Twitter noticed how his earring made him resemble former EastEnders favourite Pat Butcher.

Butcher ruled the roost on Albert Square between 1986 and 2012 and achieved notoriety for her trademark golden earrings, which became a staple of the character.

We're not sure quite how she would have fared on the Ally Pally stage, but there's nothing like years of practice in the Queen Vic.

Nevertheless, darts fans certainly had fun comparing the two, with one tweeting "Pat Butcher wants her earrings back #PDCWorldDartsChampionship".

While someone else asked: "Has Dirk van Duijvenbode been raiding Pat Butcher’s jewellery box? #WorldDartsChampionship #Dirk".

A third person chimed in with: "Hopefully a class game next between Price and big hardstyle Pat Butcher. Can see a wee scrap anaw".

And another person added: "Dutch fella playing Price here is knocking me ill having earrings like Pat Butcher".

Unfortunately for Van Duijvenbode, Price delivered his own version of Peggy Mitchell's famous 'Get out of my pub' retort, effectively telling him to 'Get out of my palace' with four sets of near darting perfection.

The Iceman will now take on either Jonny Clayton or Michael Smith in the quarter-final on New Year's Day.
