MANCHESTER UNITED were dumped out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, losing 2-1 on aggregate in their last 16 tie.
It marks another disappointing European campaign for the Red Devils – who have struggled for success on the continent since reaching the Champions League final in 2011.
This was something first highlighted by Jose Mourinho in 2018 after Man Utd were knocked out by Sevilla in the last 16 while he was manager.
He listed the club's European exits since 2011 and said: "So in seven years, with four different managers, once not qualified for Europe, twice out in the group phase [of the Champions League], and the best was a quarter-final.
"This is football heritage."
Since Mourinho's departure, United's European record has not really improved.

They achieved a sensational turnaround in the 2018/19 Champions League when they overcame a 2-0 first leg defeat to beat PSG on away goals in the last 16.
But they were then swatted aside by Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
In the 2019/20 campaign they reached the Europa League semi-finals before being knocked out by Sevilla.
Last season they were eliminated in the group stages of the Champions League and then lost to Villarreal in the final of the Europa League.

And now they have once again been knocked out in the last 16 of the Champions League as Ralf Rangnick becomes the fifth manager post-Ferguson to experience European disappointment.
They now face a fight to secure qualification for Europe's premier competition next season.
Man Utd currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, one point below Arsenal having played three games more.
