Team GB star Katarina Johnson-Thompson has suffered Olympic heartbreak after injuring her achilles in the 200m of the women’s heptathlon.

The Brit got her Olympic heptathlon campaign off to a flyer by winning the 100m hurdles with an impressive time of 13.27 seconds – the second fastest of her career.

She slipped down the order after the high jump and shot put events on Wednesday, sitting in fifth in the standings ahead of the 200m sprint.

The Liverpudlian refused medical treatment to get to her feet and hobble over the line

However, the 28-year-old went down after completing the bend but refused treatment to complete the race but was disqualified because she had left her lane.

The Liverpudlian had battled back from a ruptured Achilles suffered last December to make the Games and needed medical treatment during the high jump event.

Earlier in the day, Johnson-Thompson bowed out of the high jump event at the 1.86m mark. That was a disappointing outcome for the Brit, whose personal best is 12cm higher.

In the third event of the day, Johnson-Thompson threw a best of 13.31m to earn 748 points in the shot put.

She was disqualified for leaving her lane with what appears to be an achilles injury

It was enough to keep her in contention for a medal, although she has a huge 139-point deficit to close on the leader for the gold medal, Nafissatou Thiam.

After the shot put, Johnson-Thompson fell down to fifth, but is only 45 points off Belgium’s Noor Vidts in bronze medal position.

It has been a nightmare Games for Team GB’s athletics team, with medal hopefuls Dina Asher-Smith and Adam Gemili also suffering injury heartbreak in Tokyo.

Asher-Smith, 25, missed out on the 100m final and was inconsolable as she announced her withdrawal from the 200m event with a hamstring injury. She is the reigning world champion in that event.

Gemili immediately pulled up with an injury in the 200m heats on Tuesday, and was in tears as he explained to the BBC that he sustained the injury just moments before taking to the track.

The 28-year-old had required treatment for a long running achilles problem in the high jump
