Man Utd to be renamed on Football Manager following trademark settlement with fans no longer able to play as Red Devils

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to be renamed on Football Manager following a trademark settlement with the game's developer.

SEGA and Sports Interactive confirmed the Red Devils will now be dubbed "Manchester UFC" or "Man UFC" from FM21 onwards.

United claimed the game had infringed its trademark, and the gaming giants have revealed that the pair have agreed a settlement.

Sports Interactive tweeted: “Both parties are pleased to resolve this matter to their mutual satisfaction.

“These name changes have been made purely to settle the dispute on a no admissions basis.

“SEGA and Sports Interactive maintain that they do not need a licence to use the Manchester United name but have made the change as a gesture of goodwill so that both parties can move on.”

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously revealed he often played Football Manager when he was a player at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian told Dagbladet in 2013: "When I played for Man U, I relaxed by playing Football Manager.

"It's a fantastic game, I have learned a lot about football. I have learned a lot about players, especially young talent.

"It resembles real life, when it comes to who will be good players. They have done incredible research.

"I remember thinking the same then, that I do as a manager, you want to give young guns the chance, see them develop.

"You could push a few buttons and get extra millions to buy a player. I never enjoyed that. I would rather win in spite of, than because of.

"Many of my players play FIFA and Football Manager. I think it helps them to understand football better."
