Manchester United odds slashed to sign Toby Alderweireld as Tottenham activate release clause

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD'S odds of a move to Manchester United have been cut despite Tottenham extending his current deal.

The Red Devils are favourites to land the defender after Spurs included a £25million release clause in his new contract.

The cut-price fee comes into effect this summer as United are now just 6/4 to be Alderweireld's next club.

The Red Devils are clear favourites in the market as they lead Barcelona and Chelsea in the race to be his next club.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Alderweireld may well come cheaper than United initially thought, and with that in mind it's no surprise to see the Red Devils priced so short for a shock move."

Spurs activated the option to extend Alderweireld's contract to ensure they did not lose the 29-year-old for nothing this summer as his previous deal expired in June.

Ladbrokes: Toby Alderweireld’s next club

Man United – 6/4

Barcelona – 4/1

Chelsea – 6/1

Manchester United are believed to be seeking defensive reinforcements.

Before Jose Mourinho's sacking at Old Trafford, the Special One made no secret of his desire to sign a world-class centre back.

And as they look to turn around their misfortunes, United will be excited by the prospect of signing the Belgium international for a cut-price.

Alderweireld has featured 26 times for Spurs this year, most recently in the 3-0 win away to Cardiff.
