Martin Adams reduced to tears as fan makes incredible gesture to Trina Gulliver

Trina Gulliver was left speechless and Martin Adams had tears rolling down his cheeks when one fan handed the much-loved darts icon a very special present on Saturday.

Gulliver turned out for the Champions of Champions event on Saturday where she was defeated in the quarter-finals by Wolfie 10-7. But it wasn't the game that made headlines.

Earlier this month a total of 38 trophies and plaques belonging to the now-defunct darts BDO were put up for auction via Lambert Smith Hampton.

Among the collection were the World Masters titles in both men's and women's categories, as well as both Lakeside World Championship trophies.

The situation has been widely derided by fans and players alike, with many despairing about the dire demise of a promotion that created so much darts history.

But when Helen Chamberlain began the post-match interview she gleefully told Gulliver, the most decorated female darts player in history who has lifted the women's trophy at Lakeside a record 10 times during her career, that one fan had a surprise for her.

Chamberlain said: "One person thought that one of those trophies ought to be looked after by the person who'd won it the most. This is Pete Turrell from LP Metal Detecting who bought the Ladies World Championship trophy for you to look after for as long as you want it."

Speaking to Chamberlain after being handed the historic trophy, Gulliver said: "That's unbelievable. Thank you so much."

But even Wolfie couldn't hold back as the camera cut to him wiping away the gleeful tears.

Chamberlain was one of many to slam the decision to auction the silverware off. She posted in a quickly deleted social media post: "BDO trophy auction – absolute farce.

"They p****d about with the rules, introduced a snipe for the hole lot after auction closed, retracted that after complaints. S**t photos, zero descriptions. 4 minutes left on the on first plot – site has crashed."
