Souness hails Fernandinho as best midfielder in England after dominant Liverpool performance

GRAEME SOUNESS has hailed Fernandinho as the best midfielder in the Premier League.

The Brazilian barely put a foot wrong as Manchester City blew the title race wide open with a vital 2-1 victory over Liverpool last night.

Fernandinho, 33, played a pivotal role as his defensive ability helped stifle Liverpool's frightening trio in attack.

Mohamed Salah struggled to stamp his authority on the contest before Leroy Sane executed a wonderful winner to close to the gap to four points.

SunSport's analyst Danny Higginbotham revealed how Fernandinho's performance would be crucial if City were to get anything out of the game.

And Souness has further heaped praise on the veteran and told Sky Sports after his showing: "Fernandinho is easily the best central midfielder in our country right now.

Leroy Sane ends Liverpool’s unbeaten run at Manchester City

"The amount of work he gets through is overlooked by the technique he has as well.

"When he wins it, puts a tackle in, he gets up and makes the best pass that's on offer."

Sane's pinpoint strike ensured City are back on track after their wobble in December but he was also keen to laud his team-mate.

Speaking to City's website, he added: "Everyone knows Fernandinho is important for us,

“He has to defend the ball, win the ball, pass the ball!

“He had amazing game and I'm so pleased he is back for us.”
