Face time with the new Texans head coach didn’t lead to an about-face from Deshaun Watson.
Watson met for the first time with David Culley last Friday but reiterated in that meeting that he wants to be traded and has no intention of playing quarterback again for the Texans, according to an ESPN report.
Watson had been ignoring phone calls from the Texans brass since he felt lied to by owner Cal McNair about the input he would have during the process that led to the hiring of general manager Nick Caserio, according to a recent report by The Athletic.
So, according to ESPN, the Texans finally got through to Watson. But no progress was made in terms of convincing the franchise quarterback to stick with the four-year extension he signed with the Texans only a few months ago.
“No change from Watson’s end,” the report said. “He remains dug in.”
Just like the Texans remain dug in and continue to “avoid conversations with teams in regards to trading” Watson, per ESPN.
The stalemate just got more interesting considering another premier quarterback – more accomplished but older option Russell Wilson – is emerging as a trade candidate from the Seahawks. Both Watson and Wilson have contractual no trade-clauses so they can dictate their landing spots.
Culley, 65, is a first-time head coach who was assistant head coach for the Ravens in 2019-20. He hasn’t been a play-calling offensive coordinator since 1989-90 at UTEP. Culley and the Jets’ Robert Saleh were the only minorities hired as head coaches this offseason.
