The U.S. women’s basketball team enters each Olympic contest with a significant advantage over its opponent. The Americans have Breanna Stewart, and the other squad doesn’t.
In Team USA’s quarterfinal win against Australia, Stewart scored 20 of her 23 points in the first half, helping the Americans build a massive lead the Aussies couldn’t overcome. She also made a number of impact plays on the defensive end, showcasing the well-rounded game that has made her one of the most dominant forces in WNBA history.
“The way she did it, inside, outside, she was unconscious. She took great shots. She was efficient,” Team USA coach Dawn Staley said of Stewart’s performance. “But really what stands out to me, we know Stewie can score, is her defensive effort. We asked her to chase those guards around, something that she doesn’t do a whole lot. And she’s committed to it, and she got deflections. She got block shots. She’s just in plays. So super proud of the all-around effort that she gave us.”
Stewart and her teammates will next battle Serbia for a spot in the gold-medal game. The Americans will be heavy favorites in the semifinals, but they are expecting a real challenge.
“When I think of Serbia, I think tough,” Stewart said. “They’re a team that never stops. They’re physical. They can play inside and out. So, the last time we saw them was actually in Serbia for the qualifications, and looking forward to kind of competing against them. We’ll have the scout ready and do what we can to make things tough for them.”
