Watford next manager odds: Dyche and Nuno the two favourites to take over from Hodgson, Rafa and Big Sam also in running

SEAN DYCHE is the favourite to become the new Watford manager, after the position became vacant following Roy Hodgson's decision to leave at the end of this season.

Betfair have placed Sean Dyche, who left Burnley less than three weeks ago, as the 3/1 favourite, with the former Tottenham and Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo at 4/1.

It's more than likely that whoever takes over the reins from Hodgson will begin their tenure in the Championship, with the side 12 points from safety with four Premier League games to go.

Betfair's current favourite to take over, Dyche, was sacked as Burnley manager last month after nine and a half years in charge at Turf Moor.

He won promotion to the Premier League on two separate occasions with the Clarets and managed to secure a 7th place finish in 2017-18, earning a spot in the following season's Europa League qualifiers.

Dyche has previous history at Vicarage Road too, having spent three years there during his playing days, it's also where he cut his managerial teeth.

He took over as manager of the Hornets' U18 side before becoming assistant to Malky Mackay when the Scot was given the first team job, and when Mackay left to join Cardiff, Dyche was handed the first team role on a permanent basis.

Ironically, he only lasted a year in the role before the club changed ownership and considered Dyche surplus to requirements. 17 managers have come and gone in those 10 years since.

Nuno Espirito Santo has a record of one season and one title win in the Championship, having taken Wolves up to the Premier League in a star-studded side that included Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves in 2017-18.

The Portuguese former Porto and Valencia manager took charge of Tottenham for the opening months of this season, before being sacked just 17 games in with Spurs languishing down in 11th in the league.

World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro is also linked with the Watford role, as is his teammate in that 2006 side Gennaro Gattuso, with the Italian connection coming from the Pozzo family who own the Hornets.

Rafael Benitez and Sam Allardyce are also names on Betfair's shortlistwho could be in with a shout, both of whom are currently without a club.

Benitez was sacked by Everton in January, and Allardyce being without a job since failing to keep West Brom in the Premier League last season.

John Terry is also among the names rumoured, with Betfair offering 20/1 for Watford to become his first full managerial role.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Remarkably, Roy Hodgson has become the 16th Watford manager to leave since the Pozzo family took over in 2012.

"With relegation all but confirmed, former Hornets boss Sean Dyche is the 3/1 favourite to succeed Hodgson with Nuno Espirito Santo 4/1. Elsewhere, Fabio Cannavaro and Paulo Fonseca are 13/2 and 9/1, respectively, to take the reins at Vicarage Road."
