World Darts Championship will have new T20 colour as players support change

The PDC World Championships will have a new look this winter, with the famous treble 20 going green thanks to bookmakers Paddy Power.

The cheeky move was confirmed on Monday at the launch event for the worlds. "First impressions mean everything and as new sponsors we want to make our mark – but this isn't just about the fact the Irish are coming,” Paddy Power said.

"Our aim is to help make the standard of the first ever Paddy Power World Darts Championship like something you've never seen before. We saw last year's tournament make headlines all over the world. Hopefully we can play a small part in making this year's just that 1 per cent better.

"And yes – as an Irish brand, the thought of invading an icon of British pub culture and turning the treble 20 green had its own added appeal."

Several darts players have already thrown their support behind the move, which will definitely prove to be true come December 15. Simon Whitlock, who wrote: "About time – I have been saying this for years – green is by far the best colour – why can’t we have the single 20 changed to yellow."

Johnny Clayton added: "Hmm, it’s not quite Wales red. Best get my board turned and start practising with a green treble, unless someone can lend me a green felt tip?

However, some fans reckon there's more to the change than meets the eye, recalling Paddy Power's infamous stunt as Huddersfield Town's shirt sponsor in 2019. The bookmaker slapped an outlandishly big Paddy Power logo across the centre of the kit, which wasn't met with widespread approval.

As per usual, the cheeky brand pulled the wool over everyone's eyes , nd Huddersfield eventually released their new shirt without a sponsor at all.
