A large commercial boat with nearly 20 people aboard capsized in the Gulf of Mexico south of Grand Isle, La.

Six people have been rescued from the flipped 265-foot boat by the Coast Guard and several private boats, federal officials said.

The lift boat was carrying 18 people when it flipped, Nola.com reported.

The accident reportedly happened around 4:30 p.m., as a powerful storm battered the New Orleans area.

Wind gusts of up to 75 mph resulted in storm surges of two feet, the outlet reported.

Jefferson Parish officials told the website that multiple vessels were shipwrecked off Grand Isle, and buildings were damaged by the viscous storm.
