24-year-old female inmate dies in El Paso County Jail

A 24-year-old woman died while being held in the El Paso County Jail, the sheriff’s office said.

A deputy said Savannah Poppell was in her cell and was unresponsive Sunday morning. A jail staffer began life-saving measures and medical responders took over, but she died.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office said Monday that preliminary autopsy results indicate her death was likely due to an upper gastrointestinal bleed from an esophageal tear caused by vomiting. The coroner is waiting for toxicology results before determining the official cause of death.

Poppell was booked into the county jail Dec. 7. In a statement, the sheriff’s office said it extended its “deepest sympathies to Savannah Poppell’s family and friends.”
