A strong downward wind burst from a thunderstorm, known as gustnado, hit Denver International Airport on Wednesday afternoon where flights were temporarily grounded by winds.
“There has been no damage, but we are on a ground stop because of winds,” said Alex Renteria, an airport spokeswoman.
Outgoing flights were held and incoming flights delayed at 4 p.m., Renteria said, as airport officials plan, as a safety precaution, to let the weather system move through the area. No property damage, or injuries, were reported at the airport.
The National Weather Service on Wednesday afternoon issued a special weather statement for an area east of the airport along Interstate 70, including Strasburg, Peoria and Deer Trail, for winds up to 50 mph.
Bruno Rodriguez, a meteorologist with the weather service, said a gustnado was reported at the airport and that microbursts were hitting widespread areas southeast of Denver. Very little rain is expected from the passing thunderstorms.
At the airport, 44 flights were delayed between 2 and 6 p.m., according to flightaware.com. Before 5:20 p.m., the ground stop was lifted and flights resumed at DIA.
