Aldi has launched its first ever gift cards that can be spent on anything in the discount supermarket including its famous middle-aisle products.

The cards are being released in time for Christmas and go up to a value of £500, allowing recipients to use it for a weekly food shop or its ‘Specialbuys’ section.

Customers will be able to choose the exact amount they would like to add to the card’s balance when purchasing one at the checkout.

The contactless and plastic-free cards will be placed alongside greeting cards in Aldi’s 920 stores across the UK.

It comes as Aldi says it will have its ‘best Christmas range ever’, despite widespread concern over food shortages.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: ‘The Aldi gift card is the perfect present for any Aldi fan, whether it goes towards their food shopping or that must-have item from our Specialbuys aisle.

‘We hope customers enjoy giving the gift of Aldi to their friends and family!’

The Specialbuys list in particular has attracted a large following online due to the weird and wacky variety of products in the middle aisles that constantly change.

They can include basics such as socks or underwear to garden furniture and kitchen gizmos to the more unusual such as a ‘parking pole’ – a pole on a driveway that stops car thieves – or a plastic container to make omelettes in the microwave.

The supermarket giant relies predominantly on British products which, they claim, face fewer delivery problems than those imported – although some Specialbuys products may come from further afield.

CEO Giles Hurley said: ‘We’ve been working very hard behind the scenes to try and ensure our customers are shielded from that.

‘I think we’ve broadly achieved that and we’re very happy with our plans for Christmas and what we’ve got coming in.’

Recently, Aldi unveiled plans to create 2,000 new jobs alongside 100 new stores as part of a £1.3billion investment drive.

The discount chain made the announcement, which will run for two years, as bosses revealed sales soared by 10.2 per cent in the UK and Ireland in 2020 to £12.3 billion.

Bosses added the number of customers during the period increased from 17.6million to 17.8million, although pre-tax profits fell 2.5 per cent to £264.8million.

Aldi repaid the business rates saved from the Government’s scrapping of the tax during the pandemic, following similar moves by Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda and Lidl.

Looking forward, the supermarket announced its click and collect services have been rolled out to 200 stores, offering shoppers the chance to order online for the first time – although home deliveries are still not available.

A new checkout-free store is also planned in Greenwich, London, it said.

As part of the £1.3 billion investment over the next two years, bosses said this would include around 100 new stores added to the 920 sites already operating.

The expansion of its logistics infrastructure includes a new 1.3 million sq ft site in Leicestershire.
