The bridge collapsed just hours before Mr Biden is due to visit Pittsburgh to highlight his efforts to strengthen the country’s infrastructure. The snow-covered overpass is believed to have collapsed into a wooded gully at about 6am (11am GMT). Local media have confirmed that 10 people sustained minor injuries and there are also reports of a gas leak.

The White House has confirmed that Mr Biden was informed of the collapse and will continue with his visit as planned.
