A billionaire pal of Bill Gates has come out against the meteoric rise of AIs, claiming the technology is like the creation of the atom bomb.

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett made the stark statement in a talk during the annual meeting of his company, Berkshire Hathaway, in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday (May 6)

The 92-year-old, listed as the world’s sixth richest man by Forbes, said that while modern AIs, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, appear to have incredibly impressive and wide-ranging abilities, it is these abilities that scare him.

“When something can do all kinds of things, I get a little bit worried. Because I know we won’t be able to un-invent it and, you know, we did invent, for [a] very, very good reason, the atom bomb in World War II,” he said during the talk.

“It was enormously important that we did so. But is it good for the next 200 years of the world that the ability to do so has been unleashed,” he added, the New York Post reported.

Buffet isn’t the only influential person to have come out against the rise of AIs.

Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, Google’s former AI guru and the so-called “Godfather of AI”, recently came out and admitted that he “regrets” the work he did developing the technology.

"Right now, what we're seeing is things like [chatbot] GPT-4 eclipses a person in the amount of general knowledge it has and it eclipses them by a long way. In terms of reasoning, it's not as good, but it does already do simple reasoning," he told the BBC.

"And given the rate of progress, we expect things to get better quite fast. So we need to worry about that."

The Daily Star previously reported that countries like Russia are likely already using AIs like ChatGPT to accelerate their misinformation programmes, with one expert claiming: "AI has injected a dramatic new capability for bad actors."
