The dead bodies of a British couple have been found at their isolated countryside home in France, according to officials.

On Sunday afternoon friends went to check on the pair after they had gone quiet and when they arrived in the property in Boudrac, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, south of Toulouse, they were greeted by a horrible scene.

"She has been dead for some days and had a rope around her neck," said local prosecutor Christophe Amunzateguy, of the wife, 65.

"Wounds were also found on her body – there were signs of strangulation and blows."

Police arrived later and found the woman's husband, 64, dead in an outhouse.

"He was found hanged, and had left a note," Mr Amunzateguy went on. "The couple had a project to open a guesthouse but it was ended because of financial difficulties."

Mr Amunzateguy confirmed that a murder investigation had been opened.

He added that autopsies would be performed on each of the bodies on Tuesday.

Reports suggest that the couple bought their house in the tiny village of just 130 people early last year, with the aim of turning it into a bed and breakfast.

Mr Amunzateguy, the public prosecutor in Saint-Gaudens, said “there was no evidence of a third party being involved”.

Boudrac is situated in the Haute-Garonne department and Occitanie region, around 87 km away from the city of Tolouse.

It's also an hour's westerly drive from the religious site of Lourdes.
