A British dad-of-two, who was in Ghana filming a documentary, has been shot and killed in an apparent attempted robbery.
Syed Taalay Ahmed was in the West African country working on a project for London-based Muslim TV channel MTA International.
He was on his way back from a filming session at about 7pm local time on Monday, August 23, when a group of armed men emerged from the bush and began shooting at the vehicle he was travelling in, fatally wounding Mr Ahmed as well as hitting one of his colleagues, Umaru Abdul Hakim.
A statement from local police said: “Some of the bullets penetrated the vehicle and hit the two, who sustained gunshot wounds in the process. The armed men then robbed them of their mobile phones and unspecified amount of money and fled”.
Mr Ahmed, a 31-year-old journalist, was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital but sadly died soon after arriving there. His body is due to be repatriated to the UK on Wednesday.
Police managed to later track down six suspects, and in an ensuing shootout two of the bandits were killed and four others captured.
Police say the men were suspects in a number of other armed robberies.

Mr Ahmed, who grew up in Hartlepool, leaves behind a wife and two young children.
A press release from employers MTA about his death said he was a “devoted and sincere… and much-loved member” of the streaming channel’s team, adding that he had “produced a series of faith-inspiring documentaries and programmes.
“We will miss him every day and strive to build up on the great work he did,” the release said.
The “bright and creative journalist” had covered a wide range of subjects for the channel, from globetrotting travelogues to a documentary about the Muslim community in his home town.
His final project was a documentary that "highlighted the charity works conducted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim community” in Ghana.
Asif M Basit, who worked with Mr Ahmed at MTA, told the Press Gazette that he was “an extremely sincere, honest, hardworking and a selfless” colleague.
