The Met Office is forecasting that snow could fall on hilly parts in the North of England on Saturday (November 19).

Weather more recognisable for this time of the year is set to sweep the nation following a mild first half of November.

In the days following Saturday, it is also predicted that any snow could spread from the north to other regions of the country.

Further snow is then expected to fall later this month and during the fortnight running up to Christmas, according to the Met Office's long-range forecast.

This weekend, therefore, could be the biggest test so far for anybody who has not yet flicked on the heating amid the cost of living crisis.

Despite the unusually high November temperatures – which experts say were brought on by climate change – the thermometer could fall as low as 5C with highs of between just 9C and 10C in London.

Following the torrential rain that was witnessed in many areas of the country yesterday (November 17) and brought with it three flood warnings and 43 flood alerts, mostly for the south coast of England, from the Environment Agency, the RAC's Rod Dennis has warned drivers to "exercise great care" in the rain or snow.

He said: "The chances of being involved in a collision rise dramatically in wet weather and even more so if there's snow.

"So it's vital drivers slow down, leave plenty of space behind the vehicle in front and use their lights to make sure they're easily seen by other road users."

The Met Office declared a White Christmas last year when snow fell in Scotland and parts of Yorkshire.

Shetland, areas of eastern Scotland, Aboyne in Aberdeenshire and Strathallan in Perthshire all saw snow, as did the Yorkshire Dales.
