A 'tornado' in northern England has sparked fears of the "end of the world".

Footage of swirling clouds above in Darlington in County Durham is being shared on social media.

Comedian Bryan James tweeted a clip of showing the twister behind terraced homes at around midday on Friday.

In it, he said: "Okay, so there's a f***ing tornado in Darlington.

"What the actual f***, what the f*** – it's like the end of the world, guys."

He shouted swear words and started laughing manically.

Bryan later told the Daily Star: "I was outside Asda. It was like an apocalypse movie.. everyone was just stood around watching it.

"Was just so weird and unexpected, that doesn’t happen in County Durham."

The Met Office has been contacted for comment.

Despite being described as a tornado it is understood to be a funnel cloud due to its positioning in the sky.

The twister struck as the UK prepares for thunderstorms and subtropical air ahead of next week’s heatwave.

Temperatures are set to rocket to 27C, with hot weather expected to last from July 19 to August 2.

Last month, a tornado left a trail of destruction in east London following heavy rain and strong winds.
