Charles ‘cheated death’ numerous times when Andrew came close to ‘being King’

UK citizens narrowly missed out on being ruled by Prince Andrew after King Charles “cheated death” on a number of occasions, a royal author has claimed.

Charles ascended to the throne after Queen Elizabeth II died in September and is expected to be officially crowned in a ceremony taking place on June 3 next year.

History could, however, have looked very different, when footage resurfaced earlier this year of a supposed failed assassination attempt, which saw a man fire two blanks at the then Prince of Wales, that came within a metre of him on a royal tour of Australia in 1994.

And, ahead of the release of his new biography on the King’s life, royal author Christopher Andersen told The Royal Report podcast how Charles nearly didn’t make it to becoming King at 73.

“One of the curious and interesting things involves the number of times he’s cheated death, which I thought was fascinating,” he explained.

“He recently revealed that when he was at Cambridge, at Trinity College there, he was outside the library on his bicycle and was struck by a bus, and miraculously, he said, how he survived he never knew.

“Had he not survived, it’s interesting to think that Andrew would be King.”

At the time, Andrew would have been second in line to the throne as the Queen’s second-oldest son.

And, the author suggested the bus crash incident wasn’t the only time when the monarch came close to losing his life before the birth of Prince William and Prince Harry superseded Andrew’s right to the monarchy.

“This is also what happened when he was training for the RAF, the strings of his parachute got tangled in his feet and he was turned upside down, and he only managed to right himself at the last minute,” he continued.

“Again, it was a very very close call, and again, Andrew would have become King at that time.

“He narrowly missed being killed in that avalanche that killed Hugh Lindsay, his friend… Two weeks before Diana’s death, when he was in Mallorca, he lost control of his car and almost went over a cliff.

“I’m sure there have been other occasions as well; on the polo field he was injured so many times, he certainly could have been killed during that potentially deadly game as well.”
