The Royal Family want Prince Harry to spend time with Prince Charles but “the ship has sailed” on any opportunity to minimise possible damage from Harry’s memoir, a royal expert has claimed.
Prince Harry has reportedly had a fractious relationship with his father in recent years, and this exploded to the surface when the Duke of Sussex alleged in an interview with Oprah that his father threatened to cut him off financially when he abdicated his royal responsibilities.
This has led to very few public meetings between the ex-royal and Charles, although Harry recently appeared to suggest that security fears were behind his lack of UK appearances when his lawyers challenged the Home Office decision to not allow him to pay for his own security in the UK.
Now, with a "tell-all" memoir set for release later this year, royal expert Rebecca English has claimed that Buckingham Palace is keen to mend the relationship between Harry and Charles.
“The people I speak to tell me that, yes the Prince of Wales does really love his son, and yes there is a dialogue going on between them, and of course the hope is that one day they will be able to repair their relationship,” Rebecca told the Palace Confidential podcast.
“But the Royal Family are just not prone to these grand gestures.
“That said, I think probably they do want Harry to eventually be able to come to the UK and spend some quality time with his father, but of course it all depends slightly on how things go over the next few weeks regarding the judicial review he’s seeking from the Home Office about his security.”
Host Jo Elvin raised the possibility that Charles might be intending to keep Harry close in order to prevent damaging details being published in Harry’s book, but Rebecca rejected this suggestion.
“I suspect that ship has already sailed. If the book’s coming out in the Autumn, I expect they’re kind of on the final draft phase of this.
“But of course, the better his relationship with his father is I suspect, the less likely he’ll be to want to stick the boot in, who knows.”
Rebecca also noted that the lack of privacy that comes with visiting royal dwellings might hamper the possibility of Harry spending time with Charles.
“Unless they were going up to maybe somewhere like Birkhall, which is pretty private, then I can’t see him staying with him for particularly long even if he does,” she added.
Harry's ghostwritten autobiography is due for release later this year, and the prince has said that it will be a "firsthand accountof my life that's accurate and wholly truthful."
