Cops are hunting for a woman in connection with a supposed acid attack where skin-melting liquid was thrown in another woman's face.

Officers say a substance was thrown at the young woman in her 20s in the doorway of a property in Brighton.

The victim was taken to hospital where police say she remains with potentially life-changing injuries.

The suspect has been described as a black woman, carrying a blue rucksack and wearing a face visor.

She is said to have fled Steine Gardens in Brighton at around 4.20pm and headed in the direction of the seafront.

Police have released CCTV footage of the attacker and are keen to identify them in the hope of making an arrest.

Brighton and Hove Chief Inspector Nick Dias said: “Our officers continue to work tirelessly to identify the suspect in relation to this matter and ensure an arrest is made.

“We need your help in identifying the person in the footage, do you recognise them?

“We believe the suspect fled towards Princes Street, Brighton, and then towards the seafront.

“We are urging anyone who witnessed someone acting suspiciously in this area between the hours of 3pm and 5pm on Thursday (20 May) to make contact with us.

“Patrols continue to be stepped up in the city, please do come and talk to one of us if you have any information or concerns.”

The Argus said the woman was injured at a house where a group of medical students live.

The residue of the liquid remains on the door of the property and a cordon was put around the entrance.

One neighbour told the paper they heard a "really bad scream" before seeing the young woman being led out of the property with a "blanket" over her head.

Another described how they saw an "acid attack kit" on the road outside the property after the attack.

He said: "I went out at about 9pm yesterday to get some bits from the shop and there was a plastic box with a printed note inside that said 'acid attack kit'.

"Less than 10 metres away is where we chill. There is definitely a bit of concern."

Anyone with information is asked to report it online or call 101 quoting Operation Overstone.
