Meghan Markle was uninvited to the wedding of Pippa Middleton as the bride feared she would be 'overshadowed', a royal expert has claimed.

Pippa Middleton, the younger sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, married James Matthew in a ceremony on May 20, 2017 at St Mark's Church in Englefield, with niece Princess Charlotte and nephew Prince George serving as bridesmaid and pageboy.

Kate was not made a bridesmaid at the wedding, with an expert claiming it was to make sure all eyes were on the bride.

Author and royal correspondent Judy Wade said the decision was made so as to not "upstage her sister," and Kate instead served as Pippa's matron of honour.

But Meghan, who had only just started dating Prince Harry at the time of the wedding, was uninvited.

Meghan and the Duke of Sussex's relationship remained secret for the first five months, but at the time of the wedding royal fans were desperate to see the new royal couple.

Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand in their book, Finding Freedom, claim that Meghan had bought her outfit and planned to attend the day before the decision was made that she should skip the wedding function.

Scobie and Durand claim Pippa and mum Carole were concerned Meghan would "overshadow the main event".

They also claimed that a headline ran on the day of the wedding that compared the bottoms of Meghan and Pippa was the last straw for the decision.

They wrote: "Harry and Meghan agreed that she couldn't possibly turn up at the church, only fifty metres away from a specially arranged media pen, after such a crass cover story.

"If they worried their arrival might have created a media circus despite taking every precaution, now they had no doubt that it would."

Instead, Harry attended the wedding alone, with Meghan joining the family at Middleton's house for the evening celebrations, where it is claimed she wasn't allowed to sit with Harry and that no couples were sat together.

Scobie and Durand write: "Sitting together in the custom glass marquee that has been erected on the eighteen-acre property should have been a fun night for the couple, but, per Pippa's request, no couples sat together.
