Writing on Facebook, the lad's mum said: "My 17-year-old son has just come home with his friend and they have both been followed along Hampton Pier to just past the park by someone dressed in a full clown outfit.

"They were acting strangely, walking fast behind them, hiding and crouching behind the sea wall [and] acting creepily like they were acting out a killer clown".

"My son and his friend hid for a couple of minutes," she added, "and this clown was stood by the park along the sea wall swaying side to side. They ran home.

"They tried to video it but it was too dark."

Officers confirmed they were contacted over the incident which happened at about 10.10pm.

In October last year the town of Vendargues, near Montpellier, made world news after it become the first French city to ban clown costumes during Halloween as the country tried to contain the ‘killer clown’ craze

Officials in Vendargues banned all people aged over 13 from wearing clown costumes in the street during the Halloween period.

The clown costume craze had reached such a peak in parts of northern France that anti-clown vigilantes started taking matters into their own hands.

It is thought that officials decision to ban the costumes in Vendargues came following a ‘clown’ attack in a nearby city after one was spotted chasing a man with an iron bar and beating him with the weapon.
