Dad says mould invasion in ‘soaking’ home is ruining his kids’ health

A furious dad says his kids' health is being ruined as their house is infested with mould and rising damp.

Father-of-four Anthony Evans also says he has wasted thousands of pounds on new furniture which keeps being ruined as mould invades their home.

But the Housing Association which owns the property says it has sent experts there countless times who can find no evidence of rising damp, and that the problems are mainly due to condensation.

Mr Evans said he and his wife are now having to sleep in the lounge because the problem is so bad in one bedroom, while their three sons, 15-year-old twins Andrew and Mikey and four-year-old Alfie, share a bedroom.

Their 11-year-old daughter Toni has been diagnosed with asthma after being recently rushed to hospital, he says his other children cough "constantly" while Alfie has had a runny nose for as long as he can remember.

The cleaning supervisor told GlasgowLive: "The housing association hasn’t done anything to help us. It’s making everyone unwell.

"Our clothes feel wet to the touch and our house always smells. It feels colder in here than it does outside."

"We are good tenants. We have never missed a rent payment since we moved here in 2014.

"We want them to admit they’re in the wrong. They’re an absolute joke. It's like banging your head off a brick wall. We keep getting palmed off."

He said the housing association have sent out a team at least 10 times over the years, mostly during the summer when the issue had subsided.

He added: "They would put their hands into the wall for less than five minutes and say the issue was condensation. They told me to do this and that, open windows, open vents, keep furniture away from the walls. But they wouldn’t say it was rising damp and just sort the problem.

"I've tried reasoning and arguing about it. I'm at my wit's end. We don't care if we are given another three-bed, we are used to that. We just need a house that's not damp."

A spokesman for the association, Sanctuary Scotland, said: “We have visited this property on a number of occasions in the past 12 months and carried out work including mould treatments. We have also employed a specialist external contractor to carry out an inspection that did not identify any underlying rising damp issues.

“We are committed to offering the family support and advice and will arrange for a further inspection to be carried out as soon as possible to investigate what options are available to improve the heating and ventilation in their home.”y
